Neural Stem Cells: Their Role in Neurogenesis and Pathogenesis

The identification of successful treatments for brain cancer remains elusive. For most patients these tumors are lethal and for their loved ones a devastating experience. Our laboratory studies the organization and cytoarchitecture of the subventricular zone as a niche of stem cells and a source of tumors in the human brain. Understanding the relationship between this area of the brain and the genesis of brain tumors is of paramount importance. Our goal is to understand the function of these human brain stem cells and how they may play a role in the origin of brain tumors. Consequently, we aim towards understanding how we can manipulate the microenvironments of these cells in order to find better therapies to fight brain cancer.
