This figure comes from studies done in Steven Hsiao's lab where they investigate how two and three dimensional shapes are represented in the somatosensory system. This figure shows the response (rasters, histograms and mean firing rates) of a neuron in the second somatosensory cortex to an oriented bar indented into the finger pads of the index, middle, ring and pinky. This neuron has a multidigit receptive field as well as similar preferred orientation tuning on each tuned pad.
