Mouse promoters can be used to direct expression of heterologous genes in chick embryos using in ovo electroporation. Only one side of the spinal cord is electroporated allowing the contralateral side to act as a control in the same embryo. Betagalactosidase (blue) is expressed here in motor neurons using the mouse HB9 promoter.
