Cover legend: An orientation tuned neuron from SII cortex of the macaque monkey, with responses superimposed on a human hand. In this study, we used a motorized mechanical stimulator to indent an oriented bar into the center of each finger pad of the four large digits of the hand. Shown are raster plots and peristimulus time histograms for all 12 stimulated pads of this neuron, as well as orientation tuning curves for all 12 pads (bottom). This neuron clearly has a multidigit receptive field, as well as a similar preferred orientation on each tuned pad. For more information, see the article by Fitzgerald et al. in this issue (pages 6473–6484).
