Developmental Neuroscience

Researchers are exploring developmental mechanisms underlying neural functioning that can lead to more targeted treatments for a host of brain disorders and diseases

Neuroscience laboratories at Johns Hopkins focus on both vertebrate and invertebrate systems, using sophisticated genetic, biochemical and cellular tools to study neural development. Our interdisciplinary research focus includes investigation into an array of areas, including stem cell biology; cell proliferation and migration; differentiation of neurons and glia; cell survival and apoptosis; mechanisms of axon and dendrite growth and guidance; and synapse formation and elimination.

Recent discoveries in developmental neuroscience in our labs include identifying novel ligand-receptor complexes that control axon guidance, molecular mechanisms underlying central nervous system synapse formation, and the molecular basis of motor neuron differentiation.

These advances provide exciting opportunities for treatment of developmental disorders and may ultimately have potential to repair injuries in the nervous system.
