Congratulations to Dr. Angelika Doetzlhofer, a primary faculty member in the Department of Neuroscience, for being chosen as the winner of the 2021 Hamilton Smith Award for Innovative Research!
Dr. Doetzlhofer’s research focuses on signaling pathways that control the development and regeneration of cells in the vertebrate inner ear. Congenital and acquired disorders of hearing or balance affect more than one hundred million individuals around the globe, and many of these disorders are associated with defects in inner ear development early in life or inner ear cell loss later in life. Using mouse and chicken models, Dr. Doetzlhofer has identified signaling molecules and intracellular effectors that play critical roles in cell proliferation, patterning, and differentiation in the inner ear.
